Dan and James from A Gay & a Nongay join us for Episode 28 and we’re reviewing Dallas Buyers Club, Dan’s choice. This 2013 biographical drama swept up the all the acting awards for its two leads Matthew McConaughey (riding the wave of the Mcconaissance) and Jared Leto. It tells the story of cowboy asshole Ron Woodruff who gambles, sleeps with prostitutes, takes all the party drugs available, rides bulls, a wildly stereotypical Texan hustler and finds out he has AIDS after a freak accident hospital trip. After initially being in denial and being a massive homophobe he gets a change of heart and decides to set up an (illegal) Buyers Club where patients can buy into his cocktail of unlicensed and imported from Mexico drugs. Leto plays Rayon (a fictional character added into the real-life elements), a trans woman with HIV, who helps Ron get patients for his Buyers Club and give the film a much-needed warmth and sensitivity.
[supsystic-tables id='28'] Scoring highly on recommendability but low on repeat viewings - standard for anything either based on real life or a documentary - and surprisingly on the engagement from Kobi, overall Dallas Buyers Club scores 3.7 (so nearly a 4).
