It’s episode 77! Returning guests Jason and Tiernan (from the award-winning Stop and Search and Partly Political podcast respectively) are back for Jason’s choice, Stir Crazy starring Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. A childhood favourite (and as old as Kobi) of Jason’s that he decided to revisit and bring to the Flixwatcher team. I say team as Tiernan neglected to watch it! It’s surprisingly not racist, risky, misogynistic or homophobic as you might predict for its era, one of the other things it isn’t is funny. From the promise of Pryor, Wilder and Sidney Poitier you expect much, much more.

Scores

[supsystic-tables id='79'] At 1 hour AND 51 minutes is very, very long for an unfunny, ridiculous caper and this is reflected in its very low scores. Overall Stir Crazy scores 2.37, not the lowest but still quite low. For Pryor and Wilder completists only. What do you guys think? Have you seen Stir Crazy? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

It has to be Putting on the Ritz, but there is no Gene Wilder version so we have added the Mel Torme Version!

It’s Episode 76! Suruthi and Hannah from Red Handed return for Suruthi’s choice the 2015 horror film It Follows. The ‘monsters’ in It Follows are mostly naked creepy old women and freaky kids, summoned by teens having sex (of course), once infected the only way to survive is to pass it on or killed by an invisible, super strong, sex ghost. Scores [supsystic-tables id='78'] It feels very much like an 80s John Carpenter film, with a killer soundtrack, absence of parents, dreary run down Americana but also feels modern despite the lack of modern technology, earning its own genre of hipster horror. It Follows scores 3.64, let down by low repeat viewing and that we all enjoy a good horror film cinema experience. We’re also curious to know if there are any other fans of Apocalypto out there????? Please let us know in the comments below!

It’s Episode 75! Eleanor and Elizabeth return for Eleanor’s choice The Purge, the first film in the Purge series. The Purge (2013) is what we’ll call the original Purge as they’ve confusingly released a film in the series called The First Purge (2018) that is set before The Purge. In this Purge Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady are the home invasion victims after their (not so secure) secure house is targeted when they take in a Purge prize (homeless man). Subtlety is not The Purge’s style, it hammers home it’s high concept with the same glee and force of the participants doing their purging. If you ignore that the whole film hinges on an early single action and buy into its concept you’ll have a lot of fun with its unapologetic style.

Scores

[supsystic-tables id='77']Overall The Purge scores 3.82, if there was additional points for an under 90 minutes runtime it would have scored full marks there, but there isn’t so 3.82 it is. Over on Twitter the general view was the later Purges we’re better - seen them all? Do send us your reviews. What do you guys think? Have you seen The Purge? What did you think? It’s episode 74 and it’s a sibling special! Phil (Time Out Film) and Nick (Empire Magazine) de Semlyen join us for Phil’s choice the 2010 David Fincher film The Social Network. If you’ve never heard of The Social Network you’ll definitely know Facebook, this is the (elaborated) true story of The Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and the lawsuits that followed. Whilst the premise is interesting but not exciting the fun and sharpness is from the Aaron Sorkin (Oscar winning) screenplay and career making performances from Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Rooney Mara. Also features a fantastic Trent Reznor soundtrack.

Scores

[supsystic-tables id='76']The Social Network scores high 4s across the recommendability but loses points on repeat viewing coming in overall at 3.92, recommended! What do you guys think? Have you seen The Social Network? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!
