You’ve reached Episode 68! Returning guests Liam (Spocklight) and Eleanor (Bygones) are back for Liam’s choice, Network. Network is the 1976 Sidney Lumet film starring Faye Dunaway, William Holder and Peter Finch, winning four Oscars and influencing much of modern film and tv (Aaron Sorkin and Black Mirror for example). Network is a black comedy and satire, although set in television it can be applied largely to all media. Watching with 2018 it is probably as absurd as it was to 1976 viewers, in that what was outrageous and far fetched then and the reality now. It practically invented reality tv. In Network the news becomes a programmed reality show to boost ratings, sound familiar??!!

Scores

[supsystic-tables id=70] Network was generally well received by Flixwatcher and guests, points it dropped on repeat viewing it picks up on small screen score, overall it scores 3.95, just below the highly recommended but still worth a watch if you’re curious.

It has to be Putting on the Ritz, but there is no Gene Wilder version so we have added the Mel Torme Version!

It’s Episode 67! Tiernan (Partly Political Broadcast) and Jason (Stop and Search) join Kobi and Helen for Tiernan’s choice the 2017 Irish comedy The Young Offenders. Jock and Connor are two best buddies on a mission to find a bale of washed up cocaine on the West Cork coast, on stolen bikes. Their paths cross with an over zealous police officer and genuinely terrifying psychopaths whilst also being a journey of friendship and sort of maturity. It’s easy to compare this with the likes of Twin Town, but The Young Offenders has lots of heart and resists the urge to go full on gross out and it makes it all the more relatable and enjoyable.

Scores

[supsystic-tables id='69'] The Young Offenders scores an amazing 4.85 on engagement and overall a very strong 4.25. Highly recommended! What do you guys think? Have you seen The Young Offenders? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Welcome to Episode 66! Sugar Baby Confessionals Ruby and Sarah Mae return for Ruby’s choice Love and Friendship. A 2016 film based on a lesser non Jane Austen short, Lady Susan, starring Kate Beckinsale and directed by Whit (Last Days of Disco) Stillman. In true Austen style it follows Lady Susan’s quest to secure a wealthy husband for her daughter and herself with wonderful period costume and witty ripostes. If that’s your thing then this will be for you - if it’s not it’s an hour and a half of someone trying to find a husband might not do it for you - your choice!

Scores

[supsystic-tables id='68'] Austen and period costume fans Ruby and Sarah Mae were more generous in their scoring than Flixwatcher and this reflected in the overall scores. Love and Friendship scores 3.82 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Love and Friendship? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

We’ve arrived at episode 65! From true crime podcast "RedHanded" podcast Hannah and Suruthi join us for Hannah’s choice, the Kitty Green documentary/audition reel "Casting JonBenét". Fun fact - the murder of JonBenét was responsible for the creation of RedHanded - yet to be covered in their podcast but you can hear their verdict on this episode! It’s important to note this is not a documentary and it doesn’t shed any new light or offer and closure to one of the most famous and fascinating unsolved crimes. So what is it? It is a short of extended audition reel and imagined reenactment of what happened on the night of 26 December 1996. The end result is a collection of weirdos aiming for their five minutes of fame and beautiful cinematography - with creepy potentially pedophile Santa. If you’re looking for answers there is a two-part CBS documentary that can satisfy that if you’re looking for a insight into small town Americana and dark humour this is your biscuit. Scores [supsystic-tables id='67'] Casting JonBenét is obviously going to lose points on repeat viewing - but scores generally well on recommendability and scores overall 3.57 - strong for a documentary film! What do you guys think? Have you seen Casting JonBenét? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!
