In this episode (#29) Sam and Simon from The Picturehouse Podcast will be talking about the film "The Edge" starring Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin, Elle MacPherson, Harold Perrineau and, of course, Bart The Bear. The Edge-Flixwatcher Podcast - Image 02 This film can be seen to be a pallet cleanser from the multi-award-winning film The Revenant. What is not as well revered as The Revenant it seems to have a very strong following amongst those that have seen in, with many people claiming that it is this their favourite film! The edge tells the story of multi-billionaire Charles (mentioned over 140 times) and his companions as they fight to survive after suffering a plane crash. The survival is ended as they soon find out that they are being tracked by a kodiak bear who soon kills one of the party leaving two of the team in the wilderness.

Scores

Scores from the guests in the episode are actually very high. Helen and Kobi dragged the scores down somewhat. Particularly in the repeat viewings category. Overall The Edge scored a respectable 3.4. Our Twitter followers seem to side with Sam and Simon with a plethora of four and five stars! What do you guys think? Have you seen The Edge? What did you think? Dan and James from A Gay & a Nongay join us for Episode 28 and we’re reviewing Dallas Buyers Club, Dan’s choice. Dallas Buyers Club-Flixwatcher Podcast-Image 06 This 2013 biographical drama swept up the all the acting awards for its two leads Matthew McConaughey (riding the wave of the Mcconaissance) and Jared Leto. It tells the story of cowboy asshole Ron Woodruff who gambles, sleeps with prostitutes, takes all the party drugs available, rides bulls, a wildly stereotypical Texan hustler and finds out he has AIDS after a freak accident hospital trip. After initially being in denial and being a massive homophobe he gets a change of heart and decides to set up an (illegal) Buyers Club where patients can buy into his cocktail of unlicensed and imported from Mexico drugs. Leto plays Rayon (a fictional character added into the real-life elements), a trans woman with HIV, who helps Ron get patients for his Buyers Club and give the film a much-needed warmth and sensitivity.

Scores

[supsystic-tables id='28'] Scoring highly on recommendability but low on repeat viewings - standard for anything either based on real life or a documentary - and surprisingly on the engagement from Kobi, overall Dallas Buyers Club scores 3.7 (so nearly a 4). What do you guys think? Have you seen "Dallas Buyers Club"? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Hello from Episode 27! We’re joined by Dr Buckles himself Adam Buxton and Zoë Jeyes (producer of the London Podcast Festival) we review Adam’s choice the 2015 Netflix documentary What Happened Miss Simone? Where we and our guests also reveal our favourite music documentaries. Adam Buxton with Helen Sadler And Kobi Omenaka From Flixwatcher Podcast The documentary combines previously unreleased archival footage and interviews with Simone's daughter and friends. While its a pretty standard documentary in terms of format, starting with her discovery and mentoring through to her early successes with I Loves You, Porgy and then her decline in the 1970s following her involvement in the civil rights movement. Scores [supsystic-tables id='29'] Scoring highly on recommendability but less so on the repeat viewing, overall it still scores a very respectable 3.8 (that’s really a 4!) If you’ve always liked Nina Simone, but don't really know much about her life or her lesser know songs - this is definitely for you. Filled with spellbinding performances, honest first-hand accounts the film charts the continuous problems and torment that seems to plague such talented artists without melodrama and cliches. What do you guys think? Have you seen "What Happened, Miss Simone"? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Its Episode 26! Turbo Kid is the choice of Ben and he joined by Ed and they are Shabbos Rollers quizzers, cinephiles and awesome friends. Without the Shabbos Rollers there would be no Flixwatcher podcast. Turbo kid-Flixwatchers Podcast- image 05 Turbo Kid is a post-apocalyptic, 80s infused, ultra violent, comedy gore fest. THIS IS NOT A FILM SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN! Think Mad Max meets Peter Jackson’s Braindead, in this particular future there is no water and mad bastard overlord Zeus is grinding up people to make his own supply. Turbo Kid and Apple (get it?!) end up on the run from Zeus and survive Zeus warrior henchmen. Featuring triple stack torsos and an particularly inventive bicycle torture scene this is not for the squeamish. If this is your thing then jump right in. Among the piss and gore is fantastic performance from Laurence Leboeuf as Apple, a manic pixie dream girl on overdrive and its glorious.

Scores

[supsystic-tables id='25']Scoring 3.9 - practically a 4 isn’t it, a high score for a relatively unknown (and short - 95 minutes!) film. All the makings of a cult classic. What do you guys think? Have you seen Turbo Kid? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!
