Episode 6 sees the Flixwatcher team and guests Ben (Top Film Tip) and John (Future Music) reviewing the 2015 Netflix Original Beasts of No Nation. Ben's choice, described in Top Film Tip style "Orphaned African boy is swallowed into the quagmire of #IdrisElba's monstrous child army in crushing spellbinder #BEASTSOFNONATION"  For us first-time watchers the experience was brutal, enchanting, often funny and utterly compelling. Beasts of No Nation - Flixwatcher Podcast The episode #006 crew discussed the how astonishingly well made and at times beautiful the film was, whilst having the backdrop of the unimaginable violence and loss of childhood. Kudos to Idris Elba's remarkable performance as The Commandant, the flawed anti-hero, playing against type and adding depth to a character that could have been reduced to a stereotype. Child actors Abraham Attah (Agu) and Emmanuel Nii Adom Quaye (Strika) gave compelling and assertive performances as the two boys who forge friendship and companionship against the bleakest of outlooks. Despite it being a brutal watch - you have been warned - it is a remarkable piece of filmmaking and in a rare Flixwatcher moment everyone is in universal agreement. With caveats.   Top Film Tip - Flixwatcher Podcast

Scores

[supsystic-tables id='7'] The overall Flixwatcher Rating for "Beasts of No Nation" was a very healthy 4.2! It was uniformly high with 5's across the board in "Recommendability Score" and "Engagement Score" brackets and lowest in the "Repeat Viewing Score". We all agreed that we would want to watch it again... just not soon. That's no slight against the film, more a testament to the tough storyline. It's not an easy Saturday night film!   What do you guys think? Have you seen From Beyond? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Todd from "The Bitter End" chose the 80's Body Horror Classic "From Beyond" for Episode 5 of the Flixwatcher Podcast! From Beyond -Flixwatcher Podcast -   Todd is a big horror fan and first watched From Beyond as a young boy on VHS and it has stuck with him since then. The episode 005 crew were divided between horror and (Todd and Helen) non-horror (Tom and Kobi) fans so it would be interesting to see what they made of it.   The Bitter End Podcast - Flixwatcher Podcast The split was actually quite interesting in that the Bitter End guys both looked favourably on From Beyond. In particular, Todd managed to eek out some more points based on his enthusiasm and allegorical theories behind the film. This was a really interesting choice for a Flixwatcher episode so early on in our run and goes to highlight the depth and variety of choices on the Netflix platform.

Scores

[supsystic-tables id='6'] The overall Flixwatcher Rating for From Beyond is a surprising  3.3! This was not expected going into the recording session but goes to show the courage in Todd's conviction. From Beyond scored highest in the "Engagement Score" bracket and lowest in the repeat viewing score. Once may be enough! What do you guys think? Have you seen From Beyond? What did you think? It was Jay from "How to Write a Tune" chose the film for Episode 4 of the Flixwatcher Podcast!

Podcast! Talented Mr Ripley-Flixwatcher Podcast - Image 01

He claimed it would be the "Artsy Fartsy" choice and appeal to the true cinephile in him. It was noted as being beautiful and creepy and noted for being a film of essentially being two distinct parts; lovely bits at the start and then the part where it started to go dark and creepy!

HTWAT-BackInTime-Final - Flixwatcher

The episode #004 crew had a lot of time for "The Talented Mr Ripley", letting Beth how beautiful the film looks as well as the interesting character study helmed by Damon is he spirals into aware of homicidal mania! It was really interesting to go back and review a younger Matt Damon together with Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett. This was pre-Jason Bourne Matt Damon and it showed in his physicality. It was also a really great to see Philip Seymour-Hoffman in the guise of Freddie who would ultimately starts to untangle Tom Ripleys web of deceit.

Scores

The overall Flixwatcher Rating for The Talented Mr Ripley is a strudy 3.9. It was  surprising to see it saw five across-the-board for recommendability score. The lower marks came with the repeat viewing and small screen score What do you guys think? Have you seen The Talented Mr Ripleu? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #003 - Amanda Knox With Josh from Footballistically Arsenal and Dave from Fortitude Magazine

The Netflix Original Documentary “Amanda Knox” was chosen by Josh Landy of “Footballistically Arsenal”. Josh was a student at Leeds University at the time of the Meredith Kircher murder. This cautionary tale was always in the background for him as this was the university that she attended whilst on a year away in Italy.

Amanda Knox - Flixwatcher Podcast As a former journalist, it was interesting to hear Josh’s take on the Daily Mail journalist Nick Pisa. He was able to give some insight into the way that Nick was thinking and talking during the documentary, which potentially helped to stave off an absolute mauling from the rest of the Flixwatcher peeps.

Did Nick Pisa have to be so “smug” about everything, though? Dave Hudson of “Fortitude Magazine” was not best pleased about Nick “Piece of Something” Pisa.

Footballistically Arsenal - Amanda Knox on Flixwatcher Podcast

The episode #003 crew were generally favourable towards the Amanda Knox documentary, both in terms of the way it was shot and the insight into the story that it gave. It was interesting in particular to see the how big a feature of the film that Amanda Knox was herself and we talk about that in detail in this episode. The documentary shows the details leading up to the day of the murder and the aftermath following the bumbling Italian police as they do everything in their poorly equipped hands to pin the crime directly on Amanda and her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

It was great to see the amount of behind the scenes information detail in spite of the fact we were following the bumbling cops. This, of course, had some parallels with the true crime instant classic documentary series “Making A Murderer” which came out just under a year ago, including scenes of unconvincing DNA evidence.

Scores The overall Flixwatcher Rating for this-this Amanda Knox is a decent 3.6. We all would love to see Netflix produce more documentaries like this. Amanda Knox only really let itself down with the “Repeat Viewing" score, which I think that’s actually pretty fair. What do you guys think? Have you seen Amanda Knox? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode #002 Manhattan w/ Cathy and Dave of The Cinemile and Shitegeist

The Woody Allen Classic Manhattan was chosen by Cathy Cullen of The Cinemile Podcast. She had never watched it before and this would prove to be a great opportunity to discuss the film before the Flixwatcher Podcast studio audience. (Ps there is no Flixwatcher Podcast studio audience 😉 ) Cathy was joined with her husband and The Cinemile co-host Dave, who also presents on the podcast “The Shitegeist”. Manhattan - Flixwatcher Podcast Everyone agreed the Manhattan is a beautiful film but the conversation kept on going back to the creeping nature of the central relationship between Woody Allen and the 17-year-old protagonist played by Mariel Hemingway.

The assembled Flixwatcher Crew find it hard to look past both this relationship, the fact that none of his friends seems to have a problem with the relationship and the fact that infidelity was treated in such a casual manner throughout the film. There are definite merits to Manhattan.

It contains Woody Allen’s typical brand of fast talking comedy coupled with beautiful scenery and striking images of NYC as well as the Gershwin "Rhapsody in blue

soundtrack".

Scores

Manhattan scored 2.9 overall and this was largely due to the fact that we all agreed it will look and experience would be a lot better in the cinema. It, therefore, scored low on the on the small screen score.   What do you guys think? Have you seen Manhattan? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #001 - Pirates! An Adventure with Scientists with Tom and Felix of Wooden Overcoats

In our first episode, we chat about Pirates! An Adventure with Scientists/ A Band of Misfits (depending on where in the world you live) as chosen by Tom of Wooden Overcoats! Tom had never seen it before and chose it to bury a grudge with a former co-worker who said that it was rubbish.

Episode 001 of the Flixwatcher Podcast

We were also joined by Felix from Wooden overcoats, who had no Idea what a Christmas Ham was.

Wooden Overcoats on the Flixwatcher Podcast

The Aardman classic Pirates! (Insert your favourite ending here) tells the story of the “Pirate Captain” and his quest to become “Pirate of the Year” even though he gets beaten every year by better Pirates as voiced by Lenny Henry, Salma Hayek and Hugh Grant.

Pirates! is one of the most densely packed films since Airplane!.. and they both have exclamation marks at the end.

Scores

The Episode #001 crew rated this highly with a 4.2/ 5 so a pretty high standard to right off the bat here at Flixwatcher. The “Recommendability" scores were super high and Pirates was let down if anything by the “Repeat Viewing Score"

What do you guys think? Have you seen Pirates an Adventure with Misfits? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!
